Understanding the Fate of 'Bring Chicago Home'
Mansueto Institute Director Christopher Berry spoke to the media to bring perspective to the recent Bring Chicago Home referendum, writing an op-ed for Crain’s Chicago Business and commenting to WBBM News Radio and WBEZ Chicago. After the proposal failed to pass, Berry said, “I think voters are not right now in a place where they’re feeling a lot of trust with their politicians.”
Local Data Journalism Fellows Announced
The Local Data Journalism Initiative is excited to announce our first cohort of Data Journalism Fellows: Maya Dukmasova of Injustice Watch, Sarah Freishtat of the Chicago Tribune, Matt Kiefer of WBEZ Chicago, Alden Loury of WBEZ Chicago, Dan Petrella of the Chicago Tribune, and A.D. Quig of the Chicago Tribune, and. This summer fellows will investigate critical issues impacting cities, including real estate, transportation, and public finance, with the support of student-faculty data science teams.
Symposium on Housing & Climate Change
Join the Kreisman Housing Law and Policy Initiative’s annual symposium on May 2, Housing & Climate Change. Two major crises of our time—climate change and a lack of affordable housing—seriously challenge our ability to create cities that are both livable and equitable. The goal of this year’s Kreisman Initiative on Housing Law and Policy Symposium on Housing and Climate Change is to better understand the connections between the two. Continuing education credit is available through APA and AIA.
Mansueto Colloquium Series
The Mansueto Institute hosts a lunchtime Colloquium series during the academic year featuring speakers from a variety of fields on the latest research related to cities, in a hybrid format. Upcoming talks will explore the “The 15-Minute City Quantified Using Human Mobility Data” and “Bicycling in Low- and Middle-Income Countries’ Cities.” Watch past talks on our Youtube channel.
Urban Doctoral Fellowship
Applications are now open to University of Chicago PhD students for the Urban Doctoral Fellows Program, a yearlong, supervised cohort experience for up to ten students whose research focuses on urban issues. Students get training and meet regularly to discuss strengthening scientific writing, effective presentations, and multimedia communications, with the goal of generating a paper and talk to be presented at a leading conference in their field.
Urban Innovation Grants for Student Organizations
Students can apply now for Urban Innovation Grants for Student Organizations of up to $5,000, to help support University of Chicago student events, research, or other initiatives on campus focused on critical issues and topics impacting cities. This opportunity is open to undergraduate and graduate student groups and organizations at the University of Chicago, and can fund outside speakers, conferences, and related efforts.

The Mansueto Institute offers or co-sponsors a variety of programs for students who are interested in cities and sustainable urban development. We offer several fellowship opportunities: the Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Kreisman Initiative for Housing Law and Policy Fellowship, the Urban Doctoral Fellows program, the Community Research on Climate and Urban Science Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the Data Science Journalism Fellowship. Additionally, research assistant positions are available in our Environmental Frontiers Campus program and Urban Research Corps.
