Current Initiatives
——
Chicago Neighborhood Project
In an effort to better understand and support Chicago’s neighborhoods, this project surveys current residents—who know the city best—to create a new map of Chicago based on neighborhood boundaries (around 5,000 people) rather than just community areas (about 35,000 people).
Community Research on Climate and Urban Science (CROCUS)
CROCUS, a flagship project led by the U.S. Department of Energy, established a network of Urban Integrated Field Laboratories (IFLS) across the U.S. to study climate change in local urban communities. The Mansueto Institute heads the University of Chicago’s affiliation with CROCUS.
Kreisman Initiative for Housing Law and Policy
This initiative unites diverse fields to advance housing research and generate innovative ideas about cities. As the sole effort at the University of Chicago dedicated to this mission, we infuse rigorous research into Chicago’s housing policy debates, decision making, and practices.
Local Data Journalism Initiative
The aim of this initiative is to partner news organizations with university-led data science teams for investigative journalism on city issues. Using cutting-edge data science and AI tools, the initiative covers topics like real estate, municipal finance, policing, and transportation.
Million Neighborhoods
This groundbreaking project provides tools and data for mapping, planning, and coordinating solutions to improve the delivery of critical public services in rapidly urbanizing countries. The visual tool identifies informal settlements across Africa and other regions, aiding in prioritizing infrastructure development such as roads, power, water, and sanitation.
Property Tax Fairness Project
The project conducts comprehensive evaluations of property taxes in cities across the country. As the largest local revenue source, property taxes significantly impact residents and communities. Our research not only identifies inequities, but also informs policy decisions, aiming for fair and effective taxation.
Trauma Interest Work Group (TIWG)
TIWG promotes interdisciplinary understanding of trauma with the goal of promoting equity and justice. Through education, scholarship, and advocacy, we address trauma at various levels fostering more compassionate and effective approaches.
Urban Cognition Lab
The Urban Cognition Lab explores how the physical environment impacts human cognition and behavior. Scientists conduct experiments to understand how people respond to various urban settings. Their insights inform spatial design, policy, and planning, aiming to enhance well-being and social life in cities.
