Urban Doctoral Fellows 2021-2022

The Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation invites doctoral students to apply to the Urban Doctoral Fellows program for 2021-2022. The Fellowship provides support to doctoral students whose research seeks to increase our understanding of urban settings.

Applications are due by 5:00 pm, Friday, May 14th, 2021.

The Urban Doctoral Fellows program provides a yearlong writing and professionalization experience for up to ten University of Chicago doctoral students whose research focuses on urban issues. Students may come from any department or School at the University of Chicago; they may also be in any year of their PhD. To be eligible for the program and the travel stipend, students must attend all meetings of the Fellows.

This Fellowship provides funding of up to $1,000 per Fellow to cover registration, hotel, meal and transportation costs for presentations at academic conferences. It includes twice-monthly lunchtime meetings to review peer papers and presentations, as well as discussions of how distinct disciplines engage in urban research.

Examples of recent presentations developed and funded through this Fellowship include:

  • “How Homeless Youth Navigate Multiple Marginalizations,” at the American Sociological Association
  • “From Desegregation to Decolonization to Diversity: Inventing Latino Education in 1970s Chicago” at the International Standing Conference for the History of Education
  • “Neighborhood Crime and the Weight Status of Older Adults: The Role of Gender” at the Population Association of America
  • “Wake Up! Hyderabad: An Analysis of Road Safety Campaigns,” Urban Affairs Conference

Fellows meet in 16 weekday sessions, for 90 minutes, throughout the academic year, beginning at the start of the 2021 Autumn Quarter.  Fellow meetings are facilitated by Stephen Baker, with the active participation of the fellows. Lunch is provided.
