Speakers and Discussion

Nicholas Negroponte is the co-founder of the MIT Media Lab and the founder of the non-profit One Laptop per Child, which has deployed $1 billion worth of laptops for primary education in the developing world.  A graduate of MIT, Negroponte was a pioneer in the field of computer-aided design and has been a member of the MIT faculty since 1966. He gave the first TED talk in 1984, as well as 13 since. He is author of the 1995 best seller, Being Digital, which has been translated into more than 40 languages.

Carol Coletta is a senior fellow with The Kresge Foundation’s American Cities Practice. She is leading a proposed $40 million collaboration of foundations, nonprofits and governments to demonstrate the ways in which a connected set of civic assets – a civic commons – can yield increased and more widely shared prosperity for cities and neighborhoods. Formerly, she served as vice president of Community and National Initiatives for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and as president and CEO of CEO’s for Cities for seven years.

Luis Bettencourt is Pritzker Director of the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation and a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution and the College.  He is also an External Professor of Complex Systems at the Santa Fe Institute.  He has worked extensively on complex systems theory and on cities and urbanization, in particular. His research emphasizes the creation of new interdisciplinary synthesis to describe cities in quantitative and predictive ways, informed by classical theory from various disciplines and the growing availability of empirical data worldwide.
